Prayer in the Bible

Prayer in Revelation is a topic that is focused on finding prayer in the Bible. If it’s one place that prayer is modeled, it’s in the Bible. As they say, you believe as you pray and you pray as you believe. The more we know about how people prayed in the Old Testament, how Jesus fulfills the Old, and how the early Church prayed the better prayer will come to us. The school of prayer is the Liturgy of the Mass, and much of this is because it is rooted in the patrimony of Sacred Scripture. Saint Paul tells us to pray continuously multiple times in his letters (see: 1 Thess 5:17, Eph 6:18, 1 Tim 2:8, 1 Tim 2:1, & Rom 8:26). We learn that the early Church celebrated the Eucharist and other prayers (see: Acts 1:14 & Acts 2:42). Check out below our activities for the month as well as the assignments.

Things to work on for the Month of October

There is a lot going on in October, from being the month of the Rosary to also being the month of St. Francis of Assisi. Naturally the month ends with All-Hallows-Eve which is the vigil to the Solemnity of All Saints. For this month there are a few main activities to try at home.

Parents, you are invited to begin your Hallow journey by discovering contemplative prayer. As we talked about in our session this month, prayer is something that is handed on like it was throughout Sacred Scripture. It begins at creation with God walking with Adam and Eve, continues with our Father in Faith Abraham, Moses the mediator, King David the writer of the Psalms, and culminates and is fulfilled in the person of Jesus Christ.

In the age of the Church we pray with Blessing & Adoration, Petition, Intercession, Thanksgiving, and Praise. And of course St. Paul urges us to pray without ceasing (1 Thess 5:17, Eph. 6:18, 1 Tim. 2:8, 1 Tim. 2:1, & Rom. 8:26).

So, we urge each family to try the following:
  • Review / try the five types of prayer here: Click here
  • Pray the Rosary at least once a week (or a decade of the Rosary)
  • Find a creative way to pray, outdoors walking, while exercising, or even driving to school. Brainstorm together.
  • Parents: begin the Hallow “Intro to prayer” Challenge: Click here for shortcut
  • Parents: Give blessings to/ pray over your Children

Extra Credit

It’s awesome to go above and beyond! It is such a pleasing offering to God. I know for many families bedtime is a sacred time, but it can also be a struggle. Many families read as part of a bedtime routine. Our extra challenge to you this month is to find prayer in the Creation Story, in the story of Abraham, in Moses, in King David, and finally experiment by reflecting on and praying through some of the psalms (on Hallow in the Minutes section). We have a few recommended children’s bibles if you don’t have any! It’s perfectly acceptable to read from a regular bible as well, be sure to make a sign of the cross before you begin your bedtime reading!
